2025 Ford Explorer
2026 Cadillac Vistiq

Safety

The Explorer has standard Post Collision Braking, which automatically apply the brakes in the event of a crash to help prevent secondary collisions and prevent further injuries. The Vistiq doesn’t offer a post collision braking system: in the event of a collision that triggers the airbags, more collisions are possible without the protection of airbags that may have already deployed.

Both the Explorer and the Vistiq have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, driver and front passenger knee airbags, side-impact head airbags, front and rear seatbelt pretensioners, height adjustable front shoulder belts, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems, rearview cameras, rear cross-path warning, driver alert monitors, available all wheel drive and around view monitors.

The Ford Explorer has achieved the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s (IIHS) highest rating of “Top Safety Pick Plus” for the 2025 model year. This distinction is based on its exceptional performance in IIHS’ rigorous battery of safety tests. Specifically, it earned a “Good” rating in the latest, more stringent moderate overlap front crash test, a “Good” result in the updated side impact test, and an “Acceptable” score in the revised pedestrian crash prevention test. The Vistiq has not yet been evaluated by the IIHS for 2025.

Warranty

There are over 5 times as many Ford dealers as there are Cadillac dealers, which makes it much easier should you ever need service under the Explorer’s warranty.

Reliability

J.D. Power and Associates rated the Explorer second among midsize suvs in their 2024 Initial Quality Study. The Vistiq isn’t in the top three in its category.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2024 Initial Quality Study of new car owners surveyed provide the statistics that show that Ford vehicles are better in initial quality than Cadillac vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Ford above average in initial quality. With 35 more problems per 100 vehicles, Cadillac is rated below average.

From surveys of all its subscribers, Consumer Reports’ March 2025 Auto Issue reports that Ford vehicles are more reliable than Cadillac vehicles. Consumer Reports ranks Ford 8 places higher in reliability than Cadillac.

Tires and Wheels

The Explorer has a standard space-saver spare tire so you can replace a flat tire and drive to have the flat repaired or replaced. A spare tire isn’t available on the Vistiq; it requires you to depend on roadside assistance and your vehicle will have to be towed.

Suspension and Handling

The Explorer’s drift compensation steering can automatically compensate for road conditions which would cause the vehicle to drift from side to side, helping the driver to keep the vehicle straight more easily. The Vistiq doesn’t offer drift compensation steering.

For greater off-road capability the Explorer has a greater minimum ground clearance than the Vistiq (7.6 vs. 7.2 inches), allowing the Explorer to travel over rougher terrain without being stopped or damaged. The Explorer Platinum’s minimum ground clearance is 1 inch higher than on the Vistiq (8.2 vs. 7.2 inches).

Chassis

The Ford Explorer may be more efficient, handle and accelerate better because it weighs about 950 to 2000 pounds less than the Cadillac Vistiq.

The Explorer is 6.9 inches shorter than the Vistiq, making the Explorer easier to handle, maneuver and park in tight spaces.

The front grille of the Explorer uses electronically controlled shutters to close off airflow and reduce drag when less engine cooling is needed. This helps improve highway fuel economy. The Vistiq doesn’t offer active grille shutters.

Passenger Space

The Explorer has 7.3 cubic feet more passenger volume than the Vistiq (152.9 vs. 145.6).

The Explorer has 1.7 inches more front hip room, .8 inches more front shoulder room, 1.5 inches more rear headroom, 1.8 inches more rear hip room, 2.2 inches more rear shoulder room, 1.6 inches more third row legroom and .3 inches more third row shoulder room than the Vistiq.

Cargo Capacity

The Explorer’s cargo area provides more volume than the Vistiq.

The Explorer has a standard third row seat which folds flat into the floor. This completely clears a very large cargo area quickly. The Vistiq doesn’t offer seats that fold into the floor.

Towing

Standard Trailer Sway Control on the Explorer uses the AdvanceTrac® sensors to detect trailer sway, then uses individual brakes to counteract any swaying and help keep the tow vehicle and trailer steady. The Vistiq doesn’t offer electronic trailer sway control.

Ergonomics

In case you lock your keys in your vehicle, or don’t have them with you, you can let yourself in using the Explorer’s available exterior PIN entry system. The Vistiq doesn’t offer an exterior PIN entry system, and its OnStar® can’t unlock the doors if the vehicle doesn’t have cell phone reception or the driver can’t contact the service.

The Vistiq’s cornering lamps activate a lamp on the front corner when the turn signal is activated. The Explorer Platinum’s standard adaptive cornering lights turn the actual headlight unit up to several degrees, depending on steering wheel angle and vehicle speed. This lights a significant distance into corners at any speed.

Model Availability

The Explorer is available in both rear-wheel drive and four-wheel drive configurations. The Vistiq doesn’t offer a two-wheel drive configuration.
